maca

IMG_5593 This sand-colored root hails from the Peruvian Andes.  It’s known as an adaptogen, which is a fancy word for plant extracts that improve the body’s ability to adapt to physical, chemical and biological stress (i.e. intense workouts, inflammation, hectic work-days, and parenting tiny–to–medium sized humans).

Maca benefits: improved energy, endurance, and mental alertness; decreased anxiety and fatigue; loaded with B vitamins.

Cool fact: Originally, maca was used by Incan warriors to keep energy levels up during battle.  Pretty badass, right?

How to use it: try adding maca powder to smoothies, oatmeal and baked goods.  I’m into the Navita Naturals brand.

My favorite maca products: Bright Earth Foods + Bearded Brothers
